A considered therapeutic relationship

Trauma-informed care, without hurry

Many people arrive feeling stuck with memories, patterns, or a nervous system that will not settle. Therapy with me is collaborative and paced carefully — including evidence-based EMDR where it supports effective trauma work: we make sense of what has happened, reduce the hold of distressing experiences, and build practical ways of relating to yourself and others.

I draw on EMDR Europe-accredited practice alongside integrative psychotherapy — including psychodynamic, humanistic, existential and narrative approaches — and modalities such as Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills where helpful.

A little quiet

Room to settle

Therapy does not need to rush. Like a soft pause in the day, sessions are paced so your nervous system can find steadier ground — gently, and at a tempo that feels safe enough.

Getting started

How it works

A clear, unhurried path from first email to ongoing therapy — so you know what to expect.

  1. Email enquiry

A short note is enough — what you are hoping for, and whether online video suits you.

  2. Gentle reply & fit

I reply warmly about availability, fees and whether we might be a good match.

  3. First session

We meet online by video, get to know each other, and begin at a pace that feels safe enough.

  4. Ongoing paced work

Sessions continue collaboratively — EMDR, psychotherapy or a blend — reviewed as we go.

Who I work with

Adults experiencing trauma and PTSD, adult ADHD, anxiety, depression, autism, bereavement, and LGBTQ+ related concerns.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

A few calm answers before you write. If something else is on your mind, email is always welcome.

What happens in a first session?

The first session is a gentle getting-to-know-you. We talk about what brings you, what you hope for, and anything that helps you feel safe enough in the room. There is no pressure to tell everything at once — we go at a pace that feels manageable.

Is online video therapy effective?

For many people, yes. Secure video can feel just as containing as in-person work, and often makes it easier to attend consistently from a familiar space. We can talk through what helps you feel settled online before we begin.

Can EMDR be done online across the UK?

Yes. As an EMDR Europe-accredited practitioner I offer EMDR online by video across the UK. We settle first, agree how bilateral stimulation will work on screen, and only move into processing when it feels safe enough. More detail is on the EMDR online UK page.

Are you based in Enfield or London?

Yes — I am based in Enfield and serve Enfield and London. Sessions are offered online by video as standard across the UK. For trauma and PTSD work specifically, see the trauma therapy Enfield & London page. Enquire by email to arrange a time; this site does not publish street addresses or opening hours.

Do you offer EMDR therapy in Enfield?

Yes. I am based in Enfield and offer EMDR for adults in Enfield and north London, usually by secure video, and online across the UK. More detail: https://drchiabarsen.co.uk/emdr-enfield/

How long are sessions, and what do they cost?

Regular sessions are usually 60 minutes (£100). Extended EMDR appointments are 90 minutes (£150). Recognised insurers include AXA Health, Aviva and Vitality — full details are on the fees page.

How long does therapy last?

It depends on what you bring and what you hope for. Some people benefit from a focused course of EMDR or DIT; others prefer longer integrative work. We review together as we go so the length stays purposeful rather than open-ended by default.

Is what I share confidential?

Yes. Email enquiries and session content are treated confidentially within normal professional limits. I will explain confidentiality and its rare exceptions clearly before we begin therapy.

Is this a crisis service?

No. This practice is not a crisis or emergency service. If you need urgent help, contact NHS 111, your GP, or attend A&E / call 999 if you are in immediate danger. You can also find crisis pointers on the contact page.

Whenever you feel ready

A short email is enough. Share what you are hoping for, and I will reply gently about availability, fees, and whether we might be a good fit.
